In addition to her teaching, she is a frequent solo recitalist and chamber music participant and is a member of the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra, and the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. She has previously performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and the Beloit-Janesville Symphony Orchestra. Mickens was featured at the 2006 Midwest Horn Workshop in Stevens Point, WI as a Regional Guest Artist and has served as a judge for the Schubert Club Competition.
As a youth, Mickens performed as a member of the Star of Indiana’s Brass Theater, which traveled and performed throughout the United States with the Canadian Brass in venues such as Lincoln Center, Blossom, Wolf Trap, and the Hollywood Bowl. She also performed on mellophone as a member of both the Cadets of Bergen County of Bergenfield, NJ and the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps of Dubuque, IA, where she also taught as an instructor.
Her primary teachers include Douglas Hill, Michael Gast, Patricia Brown, and Daniel Malloy, Jr. Along with playing the horn, Mickens has fourteen years of training as a classical pianist; her principal teachers were John Strauss and Cathy Corkery. She has attended the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Madeline Island Chamber Music Camp, and the Kendall Betts Horn Camp. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Tau Delta (International English Honor Society).
