After graduation from Luther College in 1970, Harry Hindson joined the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C. and started the first saxophone quartet in its history. While serving, Hindson appeared regularly at North American Saxophone Alliance meetings as a soloist and with the Navy Band Saxophone Quartet. In 1977, Hindson moved back to the Midwest to perform, teach, and tend to family farm matters. He taught a large studio of woodwind students in northern Illinois, and taught and performed at Waubonsee Community College, near Aurora, Illinois. In 1992, Hindson began teaching woodwinds at the University of Wisconsin—La Crosse and Winona State University, and he has been teaching saxophone at Luther College since 2003.

Hindson holds a special fondness for the saxophone ensemble literature, especially large groups that use the entire family of saxophones, sopranino to bass.  Hindson regularly play recitals featuring classic saxophone pieces and new music, and he has performed as a guest soloist with numerous bands and orchestras. As a student at Luther College, he served as soloist with the Luther College Concert Band, premiering Dr. Maurice Monhardt’s Concertpiece for Alto Saxophone and Concert Band at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

In addition to his degree from Luther, Hindson holds a master’s degree from the University of Maryland and a DMA in Saxophone from the University of Wisconsin—Madison.
