Michael Geary is a percussion instructor at Luther College. He is the Principal Timpanist of the Des Moines Symphony and the Quad City Symphony and is a Percussionist with the Cedar Rapids Symphony and Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre. He has been a member of the Spoleto Festival Orchestra in Spoleto, Italy for 10 years, serving several concurrent seasons at Spoleto U.S.A. in Charleston, South Carolina. The Italian Festival has recently produced several acclaimed recordings for the Chandos Label, including Prokofiev’s mammoth War and Peace and several operas and other works of the Festival founder Gian Carlo Menotti.
While a student at the University of Iowa, Geary performed in numerous ensembles and was appointed Resident Percussionist with the Center for New Music. 14 years at this post, Geary acquired a reputation as a skilled interpreter and performer of the challenging repertoire of 20th Century Music.
