Cathedral Choir
The Cathedral Choir of Luther College is composed of 100 select singers, drawn exclusively from the rich talent of the college’s sophomore class. The ensemble is one of six auditioned choirs on Luther’s campus. The choral program at Luther involves approximately 550 students each year. Cathedral Choir participates actively in campus worship, in the Christmas at Luther concerts, and at special events and concerts during the academic year, including an annual spring tour.
Last season marked the ensemble’s first presentation at an academic conference, as they performed “The music of Eric Whitacre,” at the North Central American Choral Directors Association conference in Minneapolis. Whitacre conducted the group himself for the session, which needed to be repeated, due to two capacity audiences. Cathedral was also honored to premiere a new work (“The one”) by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo at Christmas at Luther 2009.
Highlights of the 2010-11 season include a Midwest tour with Collegiate Chorale in early April, plus the premiere of an oratorio by Stephen Paulus, to be performed both on-campus and at Orchestra Hall (Minneapolis) by Cathedral, Collegiate, Nordic Choir and the Luther College Symphony Orchestra. Those ensembles also collaborated in the spring of 2008 to perform Johannes Brahms’ A German Requiem, which was recently released on DVD from Luther College Recordings.
Cathedral Choir has been conducted by Sandra Peter since 2005.
