Richard Tirk to give faculty recital March 5
Richard Tirk, Luther College assistant professor of music, will present a faculty trumpet recital Thursday, March 5 at 8 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall.
The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Tirk will perform works by George Antheil, Arthur Honegger, Eric Honour, Ron Newman and Anthony Plog.
Luther associate professor of music Jessica Paul, piano, will accompany Tirk.
Tirk holds the bachelor of music degree in music education from the Lawrence Conservatory of Music. He spent one year as an intern in the Appleton School District as part of the Wisconsin Improvement Program. Tirk holds the master of music degree in trumpet performance from Western Michigan University and the doctor of musical arts degree from Michigan State University.
An active performer, Tirk is currently principal trumpet of the Wichita Grand Opera. In Michigan, Tirk held positions of principal trumpet with both the Saginaw Bay and Midland Symphony Orchestras where he performed with artists including Doc Severson, Dave Brubeck and the Julliard String Quartet.
As a soloist, Tirk has performed with various regional and university bands and orchestras including Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 with the Midland Symphony Orchestra, as well as performed recitals in Scotland, England and across the Midwest.
An active clinician, Tirk has presented masterclasses at several universities and colleges in the U.S. as well as at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland. Before coming to Luther, Tirk was on the faculty at Bethel College, Independence Community College and the University of Michigan-Flint.
