‘An American and Paris’–A Fall Opera Workshop Performance at Luther

Students in Luther College’s Opera Workshop course, directed by Andrew Whitfield, assistant professor of music, will present “An American and Paris” on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall on the campus of Luther College. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.
   
The program will feature scenes from “Carmen,” “La Bohème,” “Don Pasquale,” and “Werther,” four operas that have a close connection to the city of Paris.  The performance will also include “Kiss Me, Cole,” an original revue of the music of Cole Porter written by the students who will perform it.
   
The Opera Workshop class includes seniors Mandy Inhofer, Beth Jeddeloh, Lindsey Johnson, Laura Krumm, Matt Myers, Matt Neuberger, Andrew Stoneking, Matt Tschimperle and Emily Wrobel; juniors Rachel Barkel, Tyler Best, Maggie Boland, Ryan Deignan, Rachel Grippen, Erik Malmquist, Mallory Marlatt, Brittney McClary, Emily Moore, Jill Phillips, Heidi Smorstad and Jenny Ward; and sophomores Michael Penick, Alex Redding and Rebecca Vernon.
  
The student accompanists for the program are senior Matt Myers and juniors Ryan Deignan, Sarah May and Greg Schultz.
   
Professor Whitfield, baritone, enjoys a dynamic career as a performer, teacher, and stage director. His courses at Luther include the annual Opera Workshop and private voice lessons.
