Renowned violist Korey Konkol to perform at Luther Feb. 17

Award-winning violist Korey Konkol will perform a concert of chamber music Sunday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. in Jenson-Noble Recital Hall on the campus of Luther College.

The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Konkol will perform works by Frank Bridge, Joaquin Turina and Paul Juon.

Konkol will perform with Luther faculty members Spencer Martin, Du Huang, Miko Kominami, Eric Kutz, Michael Chesher and Virginia Strauss.

Konkol has taught at the University of Minnesota since 1992.  He holds degrees from Western Illinois University and the New England Conservatory of Music.

Konkol has traveled throughout Europe, Latin, and South America in solo, chamber music, and orchestral performances.

He performs with the Minnesota Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and has been the principal violist with the Ann Arbor, Peoria, and Knox-Galesburg Symphony Orchestras.

Konkol is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the 1997 McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Performing Artists, the 2006 William Primrose Artist of the Year award and the 2007 American Viola Society Founders Award. 

Martin studied under Konkol at the University of Minnesota while pursuing the doctor of music studies degree.

Luther is home to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world with seven choirs, three orchestras, three bands, two jazz bands and nearly 1,000 student musicians.

Luther students perform in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons and master classes. More than 350 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, church music and performance.
