POSTPONED: Luther’s Whitfield to perform voice recital Feb. 14

Andrew Whitfield, assistant professor of music at Luther College, will perform a voice recital Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. in Luther’s Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson-Noble Music Hall.

The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The recital includes works by Mendelssohn, Faure, Rossini and Schumann. Whitfield will also perform a set of English pieces with texts by Shakespeare and music of Finzi, Quilter and Douglas Moore.

Luther associate professor of music Jessica Paul, piano, will accompany Whitfield.

Whitfield holds the bachelor’s degree from Butler University, the master of music degree from Wichita State University, and the doctor of musical arts degree from Louisiana State University.

He began teaching at Luther in 2003. Whitfield currently teaches studio voice and opera performance at Luther.

In addition to appearances with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera Southwest and Pensacola Opera, Whitfield has also been a resident artist with Portland Opera Works and has sung with educational outreach programs for Opera Birmingham and Opera Kansas.

Also an active stage director, Whitfield directed “The Ballad of Baby Doe” for Utah State University in April 2006. For the past two summers he has taught and performed at the Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival.

Paul holds the bachelor of music degree from Northwestern University, the master of music degree and the doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Illinois.

She is the former principal conductor and artistic director of the Dorian Opera Theatre and is currently a vocal coach, collaborative pianist and teacher of accompanying at Luther.

Paul’s research projects include the study of art song of Lithuania and the vocal works of women composers, specifically twentieth century American composers.
