Luther College Wind and Percussion concert Nov. 13

The Luther College Wind and Percussion Ensemble will perform in concert Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m., in the Main Hall of the Luther College Center for Faith and Life.

The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The Wind and Percussion Ensemble will perform nine works including “Armenian Dances Part One” by Alfred Reed, “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm” by Fisher Tull, “Dusk” by Steven Bryant and “Wild Nights” by Frank Ticheli.

The ensemble will also be performing “Sunrise at Angel’s Gate” by Philip Sparke, “Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo” by Malcomb Arnold and arranged by John Payntor, “Colonial Song” by Percy Grainger, “Boston Commandery” by T.M. Carter and “Dialogues on ‘In Dulci Jubilo’” by John Zdechlik.

Luther senior Emily Workman will serve as student conductor for “Dusk” and “Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo.”

The ensemble is celebrating its 10th year of existence.

The Wind and Percussion Ensemble is an auditioned ensemble consisting of approximately 50 first and second year students. Membership is determined annually by audition. In addition to family weekend performances and a Dorian Band Festival performance, the Wind and Percussion ensemble gives a full concert each semester.

Frederick Nyline
, professor of music at Luther, conducts the Luther College Concert Band, Varsity Band and the Wind and Percussion Ensemble. He also teaches advanced instrumental conducting.

Before joining the Luther faculty in 1973, Nyline served on the faculty of the University of Minnesota as associate director of bands and director of the University Men’s Chorus. He has been a guest faculty member at the University of Illinois and director of bands in the Austin, Minn., school system.

Nyline has served as festival director, guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Pacific Rim, including such locations as Alaska, Hawaii, Japan, Okinawa, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
