Luther’s Smith to perform trombone recital Oct. 9

Michael Smith, assistant professor of music at Luther College, will perform a tenor and bass trombones recital Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. in Luther’s Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson-Noble Music Hall.

The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The recital will include work by Vaughan Williams, Hidas, Koetsier, Casterede and Lars-Erik Larsson.

Luther faculty member Du Huang, piano, will accompany Smith.

At Luther Smith teaches low brass and low brass methods, coaches small brass ensembles and conducts the Luther College Brass Choir, Trombone Choir and the Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble.

He holds the bachelor of music degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, the master of music education degree from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La., and the doctoral degree in trombone performance and literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Prior to his appointment at Luther, Smith taught at Millikin University, Knox College and at the University of Illinois. He has also taught at Luther’s Summer Dorian Camps and the Illinois Summer Youth Music Trombone Camps at the University of Illinois.

Huang holds the bachelor of music and master of music degrees from University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music and the doctor of music arts degree from University of New York at Stony Brook. He has been an assistant professor of music at Luther since 2001 and teaches piano, chamber music and class piano.
