Spencer Martin and Kathryn Reed-Maxfield to give faculty baroque violin and harpsichord recital Sept. 28

Spencer Martin, Luther College associate professor of music, and Kathryn Reed-Maxfield, Luther College instructor in music, will present a faculty baroque violin and harpsichord recital Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.    

The performance is free and open to the public.

The recital features unusual music and composers from the 17th and 18th centuries.   With wild violin sonatas by Pandolfi, intensely ornamented and sumptuous suites of Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, the baroque/Scottish folk music of James Oswald, the cello sonatas of the opera composer Alessandro Scarlatti, and music by Bertali, Fresobaldi and Rameau.

Martin and Reed-Maxfield will be joined by Luther music faculty members Eric Kutz, cello, Carol Hester, flute and Gregory Peterson, portative organ.

Martin holds the bachelor of music degree cum laude from Butler University, the master of music degree from Wichita State University, and doctor of music degree from the University of Minnesota.

He has performed with the Pro Arte String Quartet, the Amelia Piano Trio, Tuscaloosa Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra.     

Reed-Maxfield holds the bachelor of music degree from Lawrence University and the master of music degree from University of Michigan.

She has performed as a harpsichord soloist and continuo player throughout the Midwest and in New York’s Carnegie Hall.
