Luther College’s Michael Chesher to give faculty clarinet recital Sept. 18

Michael Chesher, Luther College associate professor of music, will present a faculty clarinet recital Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.

The performance is free and open to the public.

The recital will feature Three Intermezzi, Op. 13 for clarinet and piano by Charles Villers Stanford, Sonata for clarinet and piano by William Alwyn, Fairy tales, Op. 13 for clarinet, viola and piano by Robert Schumann and Time Pieces for clarinet and piano by Robert Muczynski.

Chesher will be joined by Luther music faculty members Jessica Paul, piano and Spencer Martin, viola.

Chesher holds the bachelor of music degree from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, the master of music degree from Northwestern University and the doctor of music degree from Indiana University.

His teachers include Robert Marcellus, Clark Brody, Larry Combs, James Campbell, Howard Klug, Eli Eban and Lawrence McDonald.

Chesher has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. In addition to teaching at Luther, he holds the principal clarinet position with the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra.

Paul holds the bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, the master of music degree and doctor of musical arts degree from University of Illinois.  She is an associate professor of music as vocal coach, collaborative pianist and teacher of accompanying.

Martin holds the bachelor’s degree from Butler University, the master of music degree from Wichita State University and the doctor of musical arts degree from University of Minnesota.  He teaches viola and string methods and conducts the Philharmonia.
